A fifty-year-old mother suddenly abandoned her lifetime routine of attending church every Sunday and began taking intensive swimming lessons instead. Naturally, her friends were utterly bewildered. “Why the sudden change?” they asked. “Why swimming all of a sudden?”
The mother sighed helplessly. “Well, whenever my son and his wife get into an argument, my daughter-in-law always pulls out that classic trap: ‘If your mom and I both fell into a deep river, who would you save first?’ I just love my son too much to put him in such a miserable position, so I decided to learn how to swim!”
A few days later, the young couple got into another heated row. Right on cue, the daughter-in-law crossed her arms and demanded, “Alright, tell me right now! If your mother and I fell into the water together, who are you saving first?”
The husband smiled calmly. “I wouldn’t even need to jump in, honey. My mom knows how to swim now—she’ll just save you.”
The wife glared at him, refusing to let him off the hook. “No! That’s cheating! You absolutely have to jump into the water, and you can only save one of us. Who is it?”
The husband shrugged his shoulders and replied:
“Well, in that case, you are definitely going to drown. Because I don’t know how to swim either, and my mom is absolutely going to save me first!”
