The Art of the Closet Deal

Never underestimate the entrepreneurial spirit of a nine-year-old boy—especially when he’s trapped in a pitch-black closet with his mother’s panicked lover.

The high-stakes corporate takeover began when the husband unexpectedly came home early from work. In a rush, the wife shoved her lover into the bedroom closet, completely unaware that her young son was already hiding inside.

After a tense moment of silence, a tiny voice whispered, “Dark in here, huh?”

The lover jumped. “Yeah. Yes, it is.”

“I have a baseball,” the boy offered.

“Good for you, kid.”

“Want to buy it?” the boy asked, adding casually, “My dad is just outside the door.”

The lover broke a sweat. “How much?”

“$150.”

“Sold.”

A week later, lightning struck twice. The husband came home early again, and the lover found himself crammed back into the same dark closet.

“Dark in here, huh?” the tiny voice whispered from the corner.

The lover groaned. “Don’t start. What do you have this time?”

“A premium infielder’s glove.”

The lover sighed, anticipating the damage. “How much?”

“$350.”

“That is highway robbery!” the man hissed, slapping the cash into the kid’s hand. “Fine!”

A few days later, the father told his son to grab his gear for a game of catch. The boy admitted he couldn’t because he had sold his ball and glove for $500. Horrified that his son had ruthlessly ripped off one of his neighborhood friends, the father marched him straight to the local church to confess his sins of greed.

The father shoved the boy into the confession booth and slammed the door shut.

The boy sat down in the dim light, slid back the wooden screen, and whispered automatically:

“Dark in here, huh?”

A familiar, trembling voice replied from behind the screen:

“Don’t start that shit again. You’re in my closet now.”
