A distinguished gentleman out for a peaceful afternoon stroll along the canal was about to witness what he believed to be an act of pure, selfless heroism.
Just a few yards ahead of him, an elderly man and his young son were quietly casting their lines from the stone bank. Suddenly, a loud, violent splash shattered the afternoon silence. The boy had lost his footing and plunged directly into the deep, swirling water.
Without a single second of hesitation, the old man dove in headfirst after the boy. After a brief, dramatic struggle against the current, the father successfully dragged his shivering son back up onto the grassy bank.
As the gentleman rushed over to offer assistance, he watched the old man immediately hoist the boy upside down by his ankles, shaking him gently to let the swallowed canal water drain completely out of his lungs.
Deeply moved by the spectacle, the gentleman launched into a grand, theatrical speech. “Sir, that was one of the most noble things I have ever witnessed! To plunge into those treacherous waters at the absolute risk of your own life to save that child… I congratulate you on your sublime bravery and heroic magnanimity!”
The old man wiped the muddy water from his face, gave the gentleman a casual grin, and shrugged.
“I don’t know much about magnanimity, pal. I just had to get the kid out of the river. He’s got the live bait in his pocket.”
