Doctors decided to take a woman who had been in a coma for three months off the machine: the husband requested for time to say farewell to his wife, bent over, and muttered something dreadful in her ear.
The ward was calm. Only the measured beep of the machines and the dim light of the night light. The woman had been dissembling motionless for almost three months. Her husband came every day, held her hand, laid his head on the pillow next to her, muttered words of love. For everyone, he was an example of loyalty.
When the doctors told him that there was no more hope, that his wife’s body was slowly disappearing and it was time to make a decision, he break down in tears.
It seemed like his soul was being torn apart. He petitioned her to give him time to say goodbye. In the ward, sticking to her cold hand, he leaned over and tenderly kissed his wife on the forehead and shouted something unpredicted 😱😱
The husband didn’t even suppose that there was a person behind the door, carefully watching his every move…
His words sounded so quiet that they seemed to be spoken only to her:
– Now all your property belongs to me. Goodbye, dear.
A plainclothes police officer kept an eye on him. Several weeks ago, suspicions grew that the woman’s condition was not caused by an accident.
Tests revealed trace quantities of poison in her blood, insufficient to kill her but sufficient to keep her alive.
The cops decided to set a trap. The physicians informed the husband about the “inevitable end” and provided him access to clandestine surveillance. And then – a confession tossed into the void became the solution. The husband threw himself away.
When he left the ward, he was greeted by two men in uniform. He had no idea what was going on at first, but after witnessing their frigid expressions, he sought to excuse himself. Too late. He was handcuffed and led down a lengthy corridor.
And she stayed in the ward.
The physicians recognized that without constant poisoning, her body would start to fight. And, after a few days, the monitors improved for the first time.
The woman twitched her fingers before opening her eyes. The world welcomed her with a nurse’s whisper:
– It’s over now. You are safe.
For a long time, she had no idea what had happened. But the truth was revealed later. The spouse, who vowed his love and sat by her bed, had been methodically killing her all along. And she was spared at the very moment when he, sure in his win, couldn’t hold back and exposed the news.
