A tourist submarine sank off the Egyptian coast, reportedly resulting in the loss of at least six lives and injuries to nine others.
The submarine, named Sindbad, was preparing for an underwater excursion in the Red Sea near Hurghada on Wednesday, March 27, when the tragic event unfolded.
According to local newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, the vessel had just started its journey to showcase the area’s coral reefs to tourists when it submerged unexpectedly.
Approximately 44 people from various countries were on board at the time, as the submarine was stationed near a popular hotel marina in Hurghada, a well-known tourist destination.
Emergency services responded immediately. The Red Sea Health Directorate and the Egyptian Ambulance Authority were reportedly placed on high alert, dispatching 21 ambulances and coordinating with security and rescue teams at the scene.
Authorities managed to rescue 29 passengers from the sunken vessel. Of the nine injured, four are said to be in critical condition. Several reports indicate that at least six people lost their lives in the incident.

The Sindbad submarine has long been a highlight of the local tourism industry. Its official website states that it is one of only 14 “real recreational submarines” in the world, offering passengers the chance to descend 25 meters (82 feet) to observe up to 500 meters of coral reef and sea life.
According to the company, the 40-minute underwater tour provides a unique opportunity to admire the Red Sea’s aquatic beauty without needing to dive.
The submarine is fitted with 44 passenger seats, two pilot seats, and large circular windows for optimal viewing. The experience is marketed as suitable for all ages, with the promise of lasting memories.
“We offer seamless transfers from your hotel to the terminal, including both land and sea transport, all delivered with high-quality service,” the website claims.
The vessel is also described as being equipped with oxygen masks and life vests to ensure safety in emergencies.
Tours typically begin with check-in around 11:00 AM local time, with guests boarding the submarine at approximately 12:35 PM. Reports of the accident began to surface just before noon.
